Elk Brewing, a new microbrewery and restaurant in Comstock Park, has been open less than a month, but business is already booming.
"We’ve been busy,” said co-owner Eric Karns. “It’s been great, people supporting us.” This is the second brewery Karns and his partner Jeff DeLongchamp have opened in a little over two years. Their first is at 700 Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids. Proximity to Fifth Third Park and potential customers helped Karns and DeLongchamp choose the location for the Comstock Park brewery at 400 Dodge Street just west of West River Drive and near the ballpark entrance. Karns said he felt the area “needed a brewery.”
“In looking around, every area seemed like it was pretty full,” said Karns adding, “There’s a lot of stuff going on on West River Drive.
Karns said he needed room to expand which the Wealthy Street location doesn’t have. The Comstock Park brewery is 3000 square feet compared to 700 square feet at the Wealthy Street site. Karns said the wrap around porch at the Comstock Park taproom will be enclosed to allow seating in cold weather.
There’s a dozen or so Elk Brewing beers to choose from, and the restaurant serves burgers, wraps, and sandwiches as well as appetizers and salads. The signature dish is the Elk Burger, an 8 ounce pure ground elk patty with beer braised onions, sautéed mushrooms, candied peppered bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, Swiss, and garlic aioli served on a toasted Kaiser roll. All the food is made in-house.
